DO A THING: How to Start Your Own Artist Run Space

This year we are refocusing our energy at Informality to bring you new and exciting programming, while revamping some of our old ones too! The first is a collaboration between Informality and Artist INC for a workshop on running your own Artist-Run Space or Apartment Gallery.

When Informality first started, a lot of our focus was on Kansas City’s artist run spaces as we were hosting all of our programming at Subterranean Gallery. In the last year or so, there has been a shift where less of these spaces are popping up.  This program will consist of our Senior Editor, Melaney Mitchell,  giving out all the secrets on how to DO A THING yourself! These spaces are going to be super important in the coming months as there is funding available that there hasn’t been before.

The Apartment Gallery or Artist-Run Space often provides an alternative version to local institutions. These spaces showcase the work of under-recognized artists and challenge the current social and cultural moment in an artist community. While these spaces take a lot of energy, their core facets are easy to grasp.

In this workshop with Informality and Artist INC, you’ll pick up the basics and be able to ask questions, form some ideas about starting your own space, and find funding through upcoming local opportunities.

Building a strong network of alternative spaces is going to be incredibly important for Kansas City in 2018. Any artist, visual or otherwise, can apply to be a “cultural partner” as an alternative space for Open Spaces. We will also go over the basics of that application and how it can be a platform for empowering the artist run spaces in our community.

There are two sessions for Do A Thing:

Saturday January 13th at 1:00 PM

& Thursday January 18th at 6:00 PM

both sessions will take place at
