About
Informality Blog was originally established and run by Mel Mitchell-Jackson and Blair Schulman in Kansas City. From 2014 to 2021 the contributing editors, interns, and local writers and artists submitted their thoughts on the art within their communities. The spaces focused on were mostly Artist-Run. The writing was informal and informative, embracing the infinite ways in which we could write about the creative happenings around us. What consistently and primarily contributes to bringing the community together is the cool crevices of the art world. Senior editor Julia Monté began as an intern for the publication in 2016, with an eagerness to be a part of the conversation, eventually taking over fully in 2019. Then the world changed the following year (as it does) and the project followed suit. Monté was conducting virtual studio visits, critique sessions, and workshops on how to write about art. As the momentum slowed, in search of new horizons Monté relocated herself and this project to Seattle, WA, where it will continue to uphold the integrity set by the originators, writers, and artists that made INF what it is.
This project is now accepting submissions from local writers in Seattle and abroad. Check out the Kansas City page to see the archives of Informalityblog.com.
Submit
Do you have something to say about a show you saw? A studio visit you had? An idea about your practice? Please submit this form with a short pitch (200 words or less) outlining a story you would like to contribute.
Writers will be notified within 24 hours if their pitch is accepted.
Since the beginning, Informality Blog has worked with the writers directly to edit their work. Writers will be prompted to share a Google Document with the Editor to collaborate on editing. If you have never written for a publication before, this is a safe and open place to share your writing for the first time.
Cheers!
Senior Editor,
Julia Monté
